“According to the map, Pirate Sound should be around this bend.” I folded the map and shoved it under my feet. “I’m still not sure what we expect to find out here.”

Pirates Sound was located at the northernmost tip of the island. The sun was almost ready to set, but there was still enough light out to see that the rocky terrain in this area was more dangerous than the flat, sandy beach around the resort we were used to.

Alex made a left, and the golf cart bumped along like it was going off-road. I grabbed hold of the bench seat and held on tightly.

“Ren is a nice enough guy,” Alex said. “But his perception of reality may not be like yours and mine. We need to check his alibi.”

I laughed and raised my voice so I could yell over the rattle of the rocks. “Is that your nice way of saying he’s not playing with a full deck?”

Alex grinned. “Something like that.”

We’d eaten a light meal of oysters, crabs, and shrimp outside on the ship at a table overlooking the water earlier in the evening. And then afterward, we’d changed into island wear and headed out to check on Ren’s alibi and do a stakeout at The Blue Oyster.

Alex slowed down as the path narrowed to rocky sand. The closer we got to the water’s edge, the higher the cliffs became—most of them jutting out from the ocean.

“It’s almost entirely secluded back here,” Alex said. “Could you give us more light?”

I conjured a light orb, and it hovered along with us in the air near the front of the golf cart. All around, trees and rocks towered over us.

“Most of these trees are Juniperus bermudiana—but the locals call them Bermuda cedars,” I said. “There are also some forestiera, hackberry, and yellow wood trees mixed in.”

“In game warden mode, I see,” Alex teased.

I chuckled. “I just love the outdoors. You know that.”

“And those?” Alex pointed to what looked like tiny palm trees lining the water’s edge.

“Palmettos.” I leaned closer to the front of the golf cart. “Is that a shack near the water?”

“Looks like it. Looks like there are tons of golf carts around it as well. Maybe a restaurant?”

Alex drove another twenty yards before coming to a stop next to a red golf cart. We hopped out and made our way over to the wooden shack a few feet away from the water. Since we were in a cove, the water was still and calm. No waves in sight.

Music was softly spilling out from inside the structure. The area was still dim, but glowing light illuminated the front of the building that faced the water. Strolling through the sand, Alex and I rounded the building.

“Not what I was expecting,” I said.

The front of the building was basically a massive deck with dozens of tables scattered about. A band was setting up on the sand and checking their sound system. A smiling mermaid greeted us and asked if we’d like a table outside or if we’d rather sit bar side.
